Chapter Five
"What are we going to do about Darik?" I asked, shutting my door as soon as I followed Guthrie in, dropping my boots next to my dresser, tossing our shirts at the hamper next to the bathroom door, and pulling him into my arms.
His hands slid up my chest and over my shoulders, his fingers sliding into the hair at the back of my head. He tugged my head down, so he could nibble at my bottom lip before talking around it. "I'll get hold of Wheeler and tell him to check in with the Bourne House." His tongue caressed the flesh between his teeth, and I groaned, letting my eyes fall closed.
He released my lip, brushing his mouth to mine before pulling back slightly. "If Darik told anyone, it would be his mom. She works in the kitchen and news travels fast through their. It wouldn't take much for him to find out for me."
I opened my eyes, my lips twisting at the mention of the mentor I'd never met. He sounded important to my mate. On the one hand, I was glad he had at least one other person in this world that he mattered to, but I couldn't deny there was a small part of me that worried just a bit that there was more there.
"I doubt he would tell anyone though," Guthrie continued, clearly unaware of my odd jealousy. "Too many questions would come up."
I cleared my throat. "So, everyone there still thinks youâre dead? Where do you live?"
I'd wondered many times before where he lived. I assumed he had the ability to travel between Earth and the elf realm, but I'd never asked about the actual location, or if he lived alone. If all went well, he'd be living with me soon.
"With Wheeler for now," he answered distractedly, leaning forward to kiss the hollow of my collarbone.
It was hard to be too jealous when his tongue swept out, rolling over the bone, and then flicked against the dip.
"And you guys are just student and teacher?" I asked anyway, needing to at least clear the air, my head lolling to the side.
Jealousy was new to me. I'd had a few relationships in my life, I was over four hundred years old, after all. But, it had always been my practice to let my partners have their space. If they seemed interested in someone else, I cut them loose. I didn't see the point in trying to keep someone around who would rather be somewhere else.
I wasn't sure how I felt about this new emotion. It wasn't a very pleasant feeling.
The nibbling stopped, and there was a moment of hesitance that made me feel even worse before Guthrie slowly pulled back, his pretty blue eyes meeting mine. His lips twitched and I got the impression he was fighting a laugh.
"We've never been anything, but student and teacher," he said, clearly amused by the whole thing if the smile winning the game his mouth was trying to play was anything to go by.
